West Ham keen on 22-year-old French midfielder – Face European competition, could come down to personal preference

Only signing for Strasbourg last summer from RC Lens for £1.8m, it didn’t take long for Jean-Ricner Bellegarde to catch the eye of European clubs.

After just one season in Ligue 1, the 22-year-old is wanted by two clubs, according to Foot Mercato, among which are West Ham.

The Hammers, who avoided relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, will want to bolster their squad to avoid a repeat of the 2019-20 campaign, and midfield is an area of need.

Linked with players such as Nahitan Nández, West Ham are also looking in France, a favourite hunting ground of theirs, where they will face some competition for the midfielder from Fiorentina.

Capable of playing in multiple positions, there is certainly a lot to like about Bellegarde, and as Foot Mercato point out, we now have to wait and see to find out who will make the first move.

Neither Fiorentina or West Ham have European football to offer, so there’s no real advantage either way, so it could all come down to the player’s personal preference in terms of league.

Either that, or it just becomes a purely financial matter.

West Ham and West Brom in transfer fight for Junior Caicara as Basaksehir demand £3m for Brazilian full-back

Exclusive Steve Brenner

WEST HAM and West Brom are both tracking Brazilian full-back Junior Caicara.

The 31-year-old won the Turkish title with Basaksehir last season but fancies a move to the Premier League.

Zenit St.Petersburg are also interested although the player would prefer to try his luck in England.

He’s valued at around £3million and can also operate in midfield in a more attacking role.

Junior has a Bulgarian passport which would help in sealing a move to the London Stadium or the Hawthorns.

The Hammers have prioritised signing a right-back this summer as they remain threadbare in that area of the field.

Pablo Zabaleta's decision to leave the club means they are left with just Ryan Fredericks to fill the role.

They have been linked with a move for Barcelona's Moussa Wague with David Moyes keen on the 21-year-old.

Wague spent the second half of last season on loan at French side Nice, who decided against activating his purchase option after making just five appearances due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Meanwhile the Baggies are also looking to add numbers as they plot their Premier League survival bid.

West Ham in the race for international defender

West Ham's summer will, unfortunately, more than likely revolve around Declan Rice.

The midfielder has become highly sought-after and a move to Chelsea could be on the cards.

That's if everything goes to plan on the buying side.

For the Hammers, they won't want to lose Rice, but after finishing 16th last season, they may be forced to relinquish a player who has now become a regular member of Gareth Southgate's England side.

Ultimately, the Irons will pay the price for a shoddy couple of years where they've failed to live up to expectations.

However, selling Rice could at least bag them a hefty fee in order to replenish their tiring squad.

Moves for players like John Stones and Brahim Diaz have been touted, while Matty Cash is also an option at £15m.

However, one of their latest targets could address their left-back issues.

Sky Sports Italia claimed earlier this week that West Ham are one of the sides in the chase for Ukrainian full-back Vitaliy Mykolenko.

The Dynamo Kiev defender is just 21 years of age and has caught the eye of Inter Milan and Napoli as well.

The youngster has a contract in Kiev until 2023 so any deal isn't likely to come too cheap.

According to Transfermarkt, Mykolenko is valued at around £8.10m, but in today's market, it wouldn't be a great surprise if he departed for more.

West Ham are thought to be further behind in the race with the player already receiving proposals from Italy.

GIVEMESPORT'S Matt Dawson says...

Mykolenko has been capped just eight times by his national side but he is a rising star of Ukrainian football and is quickly emerging as one of the most impressive full-backs in his age group.

In 2019/20, the defender contributed to 11 goals, seven of which were assists.

Now, the Ukrainian top-flight falls below the Premier League in terms of quality, but the regularity with which he strides forward is incredibly eye-catching.

For context, he created more goals this season than any other West Ham player. Pablo Fornals and Robert Snodgrass were the Irons' top creators in that regard, picking out a teammate for a goal on five occasions each.

More importantly, though, is that he could solve the issues that are plaguing David Moyes' team on the left-hand side of defence.

Aaron Cresswell played 31 times last season but didn't look overly convincing, earning a WhoScored average match rating of 6.62 last season. Arthur Masuaku was even worse as Mykolenko topped the pair of them for aerial duels and interceptions in the Europa League.

Furthermore, he already knows Andriy Yarmolenko well from their time together at international level.

In fact, they have a terrific understanding. The duo combined for a goal against Portugal this season as Mykolenko swung a ball in which was prodded home by the winger.

That certainly bodes well.
